The rumor mill hits hard today with one of the bigger ones in months falling the way of the ‘net.  According to sources at AICN, apparently the Wachowski Brothers (helmers of the Matrix trilogy and Speed Racer) who were supposed to shoot “Plastic Man” are now being looked at for a “Superman” franchise re-boot, in the form of a trilogy.  Via MTV’s Splash Page we get the following:

“[The Wachowskis] are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final,” wrote the tipster. “Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man – He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily. Says, the very thought of the brothers making a superman movie is unbelievable as they have grown up in the world of comic books and they would be ideal for the project.”

Now, I’ll admit that my first thoughts surrounding another Superman project have been consistent.  After seeing Bryan Singer’s version a few years back, I couldn’t possibly see a reason for doing another one.  Everyone knows Superman’s story intimately, either through legend, comics, and now in the form of several TV shows and films.  There will never be another Christopher Reeve as Superman to me.  I can’t say that I have a lot of interest in this possible project.

Another film series of the steeled one on the way?

On the flip side, while I might have to plead ignorance here, a Plastic Man project definitely has my interest.  He is a star of comic books of my youth and one of the heroes yet to make it to the big screen.  In the right hands (the Wachowski’s I would consider the right hands), I would be highly intrigued to see what they could do with the extending limbed one.  Effects would be everything in this sort of film I suspect, but with the right team and a quality storyline behind it, I would be interested in that project.  So, I am split on this rumor.

I definitely would like to see Plastic Man and maintain that Superman, unless it was to be a mixed sort of thing where he had other superhero characters involved with him, (essentially in a Justice League format) not simply the same old rehashed villians like Lex Luthor, then I would rather pass on this project.  Singer ruined it for me, even though I thought Routh was reasonably solid casting.  That being said, I do think the Wachowski’s could offer a more science fiction take on the Man of Steel, what with their Matrix background and all, so if it does HAVE to happen then I suspect they are as good a choice as any to do it.  Still overall though, not that interested.  I mean, lets be honest, I think any time you have hit 3 films in a franchise, that is enough.  With Superman, we have already surpassed that (with the originals being counted).  Who would think that Star Wars was better off having the last three prequels being told versus just the original trilogy?  Honestly, did that not ruin it for you?  What are your thoughts here?  Is Superman with Wachowskis a good idea?  Or would you rather see them tackle Plastic Man?  Share.
