Movie Poster Round-Up: ‘Broken Embraces’, ‘Edge of Darkness’, ‘Dear John’, tons more!

“Every day a star is born, clap for ‘em”- so goes the chorus in a new Jay-Z track.  Every week, new Movie Posters come our way, clap for us.  Its Friday, so here are the latest one sheets from around the web, courtesy of IMP Awards and Live For Films.  This is a very large round-up, one of the bigger we’ve had, but enough splitting hairs, right?  We have a few international one sheets for you this week, so I will give you those first.  They include a new Korean New Moon poster The Twilight Saga’s New Moon seems long these days; a Vanquisher poster for the Thai actioner, a UK one sheet for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Planet 51 int’l poster, and the first poster for Penelope Cruz’s Broken Embraces.  That last one happens to be an American poster for the Spanish film.

Two new Toy Story 3 posters come, followed by a pair of new Saw VI posters.  Saw 7 is already in the works too.  Yay!  By yay, I mean, boo.  Like when DMC said “not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good.”  The indie Defamation comes next, then the original poster for that “Chuck” actresses new movie, The Canyon.  The second one sheet for Did You Hear About The Morgans? fails to excite.  The new poster for Meryl Streep’s fall film It’s Complicated is slightly better.  The premier poster for Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness is better still.

We have a teaser for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Painfully easy to fit on a marquee.  A new poster for The Princess and the Frog appears as well. The new Daybreakers poster follows that.  It has a Pandorum like feel to me for some reason.  As we near the close, the one sheet for Me and Orson Welles appears.  The “Me” does not reference me, sadly, for my legions of fans. The first poster for Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried’s Dear John rounds it all out.  Enjoy the weekend at the movies!

Movie Poster Round-Up: ‘New Moon’, ‘Bad Lieutenant’, ‘Dare’, more!

Some more movie poster goodness comes your way in our weekly round-up.  The Jason Statham starring The Mechanic promo poster kicks things off this week.  You can also see the new one sheet for Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story. Continuing along similar sort of lines we give you Ten9Eight poster. And since you wanted them, here are two new Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans posters for you, featuring Nic Cage and Eva Mendes.  I am also hoping that what follows is the last poster for Planet 51 that we give you, but I suspect it might be wishful thinking.

I actually think that the new movie trailer for Dare looks pretty decent.  The poster, however, is merely average.  That is followed by a new one sheet for The Fantastic Mr. Fox. We also have the Zero one sheet, a UK-Quad for Ong Bak 2 and The Crazies promo poster.  On the foreign/documentary tip, we have posters for The Messenger, Killing Kastzner, and As Seen Through Their Eyes.  Their, being babies, I believe.  But what you have all been waiting for comes next. The biggest one-sheets for the week likely belong to The Twilight Saga’s New Moon.  We have three new posters for that highly anticipated film.  Thanks to IMPAwards and Live For Films for the hits.

‘Twilight’ Director Hardwicke Set to Helm ‘Red Riding Hood’

Twilight director who feel out of being able to helm the sequel is landing on her feet with a (possible) pair of projects.  Warner Brothers re-upping of Little Red Riding Hood is all but a done deal. The movie will be a gothic update of the classic fairy tale, so we can expect it to appeal to roughly the same crowd that will turn out for New Moon (at least demographically). She is also in discussions in the early stages regarding the possible helming of 21 Jump Street, which is being written by none other than Jonah Hill. That is an update of the TV show of the same name that helped “jump start” the career of Johnny Depp, among others. It appears that both projects are studio priorities though, so while “Hood” is all but a done deal, “Street” might be more of a stretch due to the production schedules. The Risky Biz Blog has the following regarding the projects.

“Hood” is expected to offer a Gothic update on the Grimm Bros. tale, of course about a young girl who encounters the villainous wolf on her way to her grandmother’s house, with “Orphan” scribe David Leslie Johnson writing the new version. The presence of a wolf as a central character in the original fairy-tale is sure to prompt comparisons to “Twilight,” which centers not only on vampires but a sect of werewolves, particularly the character of Taylor Lautner’s Jacob.

“Street,” which Jonah Hill is writing as a possible starring vehicle, will be an action-heavy retelling of the Fox television series. The hourlong show — which was one of the first hits for the then-fledgling network and launched the career of Johnny Depp — centered on a group of twentysomething policemen who looked young enough to go undercover in high schools and colleges. Neil Moritz is producing.

Off the top, I don’t know about Hill as a lead in “Jump Street” but that is not what this story is about.  Hardwicke on the other had, seems to be doing well for herself considering the difficult economy.  The possibility of both of these projects, plus she is already looking to shoot an updated version of “Hamlet” within the next 6 months or so, with Emile Hirsch in the title role.  This is all from the woman who got her start with Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown.  Not bad.  Let us know your thought on her prospects as director for either of these projects.  Particularly interested in those from Twilight watchers. Rob?  If you are interested in an upcoming wolf related film, check the footage on The Wolfman for good measure.

Twilight’s ‘New Moon’ Pictures 4 You

The media train that is barreling down the railways for The Twilight Saga’s New Moon continues to churn along at a rapid rate.  The latest fix given are these four pics from the upcoming film.  There is the set pic of Chris Weitz directing Kristen Stewart’s Bella, the Predator or Mekhi Phifer from 8 Mile era brother potentially mud-sharking (you’d have to tell me who this character is, sorry) with Kristen Stewart, Edward Pattison with Bella pre fang exposure (sheer guess), and finally a group of 4 dudes who seriously need to spend the time taking some “Z-Mass PM” and pack on a few lbs.  Yes, the airbrushed abs look okay but if you are gonna tear off your shirt, throw some more mass and definition out there at least.  I believe this crew is technically called The Wolf Pack, but not the NC State one who defeated a Houston team led by Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler’s “Phi Slamma Jamma.”  I don’t even expect you to get that, but I do, and if you care, do a little google search to uncover the meaning.  In the meantime, enjoy the New Moon pics…I know you will.  Photos courtesy of Movie Moron.

Is it just me or does Kristen Stewart always look stoned?  I strangely kinda like it.  Also that Ed Pattison sure is dreamy.  Out.

Movie Poster Round-Up (May 16-22)

This week’s edition of the Round-Up features a few posters that might get some of you excited.  The first official poster for The Twilight Saga’s New Moon has dropped, and you may read into it that a love triangle might exist there?  We also have a few of the first posters for Disney’s G-Force that have hit us.  The first is a main poster and we added a few character posters to boot.  You love guinea pigs, admit it.  Don’t get any Misconceptions about that film doing much business, it does star Orlando Jones for crying out loud.  The Art of Being Straight shows a naked leg which leads us to believe what, is it a man’s or woman’s leg?  I can tell you this art is not a difficult one if you want to be straight.

We bring you new posters for Pontypool, My Sisters Keeper (echoing Nino Brown from New Jack City’s question) and a weird District 9 poster.  The Asperger’s Syndrome picture Adam and Michelle Pfeifer’s Cheri appear as well.  If you need it, I Sell The Dead is proof that starring in the LOTR films will make you a mega-star.  And how many Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince posters can you make?  This is roughly 20 for them, so blah, blah, blah.  Lastly, Andy Garcia returns with City Island.  Sadly, his twin brother however, does not.  I would like to say that there is more to see in this post, but that would be a lie.  Thanks to IMP Awards for the hookup and enjoy your Memorial Day weekend.

The Nest’s Film News Daily

A lot of news to get to today, so let’s just dive in.

Chris Evans, aka Johnny Blaze, joins Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in a DC/Vertigo comic adaptation for The Losers. It’s about a special ops team betrayed by their superiors having to do what they do best and enact stealthy revenge. I like the cast. I’m getting flashbacks of playing “Rainbow 6″ on the PC back in the day. Could be cool. [Mania]

If you like yourself some Twilight, you can see the new photo of the famed Wolf Pack for the upcoming Twilight sequel, New Moon. [Twilight-Movie.org]

Angelina Jolie is on the verge of acquiring the rights to a series of Patricia Cornwell novels involving a character named Dr. Kay Scarpetta who’s a medical examiner that solves crimes. I accidentally wrote “crap” when I was writing “crimes.” Maybe subconsciously that’s what I think this “franchise” will be. [Ace Showbiz]

In more Twilight-related news, director David Slade is confirmed to be helming the third film in the franchise, Eclipse. Slade’s directorial debut in Hard Candy was great. I thought he’d do something better than this, but Alfonso Cuaron directy a Harry Potter film. It could be a great move for the franchise. [Twilight Lexicon]

“Empire” is at it again, releasing new set pics. This time it’s for the new Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration, Shutter Island. It’s another one of our anticipated films of the year. Be sure to check it out. [Beyond Hollywood]

Another new set pic is revealed via [Film School Rejects] for the upcoming Matthew Vaughn adaptation of the graphic novel, “Kick-Ass.” This is one I’m pretty hyped about. Vaughn’s Layer Cake is pretty dope, and I like the concept for this one.

[Dread Central] has some news on Vanessa Hudgens gearing up to star in an update of Beauty and the Beast alongside Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell in Beastly. The animated Disney film is the ultimate telling of the tale and Belle is the hottest Disney princess ever created. Agree or disagree?

Want to see the first pic of Mel Gibson’s return to acting? [Coming Soon] has the first set pic for Edge of Darkness.

Here’s your big rumor for the day: Remember how Steven Spielberg is going to direct the first Tintin film and Peter Jackson is going to direct the second in a trilogy? The third film was supposedly going to be co-directed, but now the name Edgar Wright is being bandied about. He says he doesn’t know anything about it, but Shia LeBeouf said the same thing about his role in the last Indiana Jones film until he was, of course, in it. [Rama's Screen]

Are you hyped for the new Pixar film, Up, like I am? We shared the first screengrab of the short that will show before it, Partly Cloudy, last week. Now, thanks to [Cartoon Brew] we have a bit of a description of the short and a couple other images. One more month, baby!

Finally, Director Henry Selick (Coraline) foresees film advancing past 3-D and into “holograms.” One of my friends and I have always discussed this possibility, but for now the industry will almost certainly stay focused on 3-D. After all, Hollywood still hasn’t embraced Maxivision. [Thompson on Hollywood]

bayona

Del Toro JAB’s Director to ‘Eclipse’ in ‘Twilight’ franchise

The Twilight film franchise is one that will not slow down anytime soon, so the latest in the rumor mill has Gullermo Del Toro pupil Juan Antonio Bayona (hence the JAB in the title) as the next possible director after this year’s New Moon.  If he does indeed helm Eclipse, the third film in the franchise, then this would mark a departure of sorts since he was the director of the semi-acclaimed horror film The Orphanage.  Why is this a departure?  Well, you began with Catherine Hardwicke, a woman to direct Twilight, then went to Christopher Weitz, mainly known for comedies for New Moon, and now possibly to a little known horror director co-signed by GDT (see here for more on HIS lineup) for Eclipse.  Interesting news for fans of the books or movie(s).

I find this kind of bizarre if this takes place, not only for the above noted reason, but primarily from the standpoint of jumping around so much will lead to an inconsistent vision for what is expected with each film.  A real surprise in fact, considering Weitz has yet to complete his film, and therefore, if New Moon does very well, why wouldn’t he be retained for the following movie?  Or at least offered a shot at taking a crack at Eclipse.  Seems strange to me.  I know there was a big hub-bub about Hardwicke leaving and rumors of a seemingly bitter dispute with the studio either over money or creative control or both, but still, a franchise generally is better served with at least some sort of consistent vision.  Think the Lord of th Rings trilogy or more notably, Christopher Nolan’s Batman reboot.  I am not saying that this is always in the best interest of a franchise, but still wouldn’t you at least want to consider the possibilities if you are a studio of seeing some sort of consistency brought to a full realization?  Source: Riskybusinessblog.  Debate and discuss, please.
