Golden Globes 2011 Winners and Nominees List

The 2011 Golden Globes went off without relative hitch last night, a few blocks away in Beverly Hills. I have included all of the film categories with the nominations for each and the movie awards winners highlighted by ***** next to their names. I have included a few of my thoughts on some of the Golden Globes results for the winners and categories below the appropriate section. Let me know your thoughts and whether you agree or disagree with the outcomes.

Cecil B. DeMille Award

Robert De Niro*****

Totally shocked that DeNiro won here. Wow.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network*****

If you read regularly, you know that I feel that Inception is the finest film of the year, and it’s not that close. With the speculation leading up to the awards though, it’s not a surprise that Fincher’s film won. It’s a quality entertainment that I have only seen once, so I look forward to seeing it again in the next few weeks.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Halle Berry – Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman – Black Swan*****
Michelle Williams – Blue Valentine

She was the favorite and is the same to win Oscar.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Colin Firth – The King’s Speech*****
James Franco – 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg – The Fighter

I think this sets Firth up as the odds on favorite for an Oscar win as well. Not the strongest category I have ever seen here, to my knowledge.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical

Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right*****
Red
The Tourist

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical

Annette Bening – The Kids Are All Right*****
Anne Hathaway – Love & Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie – The Tourist
Julianne Moore – The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone – Easy A

This was Emma Stone’s to lose…amazed that she didn’t pull it out.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical

Johnny Depp – Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp – The Tourist
Paul Giamatti – Barney’s Version*****
Jake Gyllenhaal – Love & Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey – Casino Jack

Ditto for Depp’s stellar effort in The Tourist. Who didn’t love that movie?

Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Amy Adams – The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter – The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis – Black Swan
Melissa Leo – The Fighter*****
Jacki Weaver – Animal Kingdom

I figured this was likely between Leo and Adams and not entirely surprised by the outcome. Leo transformed herself into the role, with pursed lips throughout. I was wondering whether it was a substantial enough role to win, but it turns out it was. I still think this could be a contested category come Oscar time.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Christian Bale – The Fighter*****
Michael Douglas – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield – The Social Network
Jeremy Renner – The Town
Geoffrey Rush – The King’s Speech

The best performance by far belonged to the rightful winner in Bale. He made me a real fan of his with this performance. Kind of a weird dude, but he can definitely act.

Best Animated Feature Film

Despicable Me
How To Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3*****

Best Foreign Language Film

Biutiful (Mexico, Spain)
The Concert (France)
The Edge (Russia)
I Am Love (Italy)
In A Better World (Denmark)*****

Best Director – Motion Picture

Darren Aronofsky – Black Swan
David Fincher – The Social Network*****
Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech
Christopher Nolan – Inception
David O. Russell – The Fighter

No surprise here either, though I still say Inception gosh damn it!!

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Simon Beaufoy, Danny Boyle – 127 Hours
Christopher Nolan – Inception
Stuart Blumberg, Lisa Cholodenko – The Kids Are All Right
David Seidler – The King’s Speech
Aaron Sorkin – The Social Network*****

Ditto for above. It was a two dog race between Inception and Network. Not unhappy for Sorkin though by any means.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Alexandre Desplat – The King’s Speech
Danny Elfman – Alice in Wonderland
A. R. Rahman – 127 Hours
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – The Social Network*****
Hans Zimmer – Inception

Again, a battle between the two films, but Reznor’s work was stellar. I would have given he and Ross this category. Glad he won.
