Who should be the next Batman?
As modern superhero films go, nothing seems to live up to either The Dark Knight or sequel The Dark Knight Rises. The Iron Man trilogy was fun, while Avengers Assemble provided enough entertainment, but the two most recent Batman movies stand out as classics of the genre. Could there be another reboot in the pipeline?
If there is, there’ll be intense speculation about who will be next to take on the challenging role of playing the Caped Crusader. While another Batman film might taint our memory of The Dark Knight, there’ll be some names mentioned that might seem just right for the part. In a recent survey conducted by Ladbrokes Games, 15.9% said they wanted Ryan Gosling over any other actor.
Flavour of the month?
Gosling’s been all over cinema screens lately. He’s appeared in so many box office blockbusters lately that it could seem inevitable that we all become a little tired of seeing him. However, he does seem suited to action films, and would seem like a realistic successor to Christian Bale – buff, but not too brawny. Whether he’ll still be a box office draw in the next few years is open to question though.
The next two choices in the survey were Michael Fassbender and Jake Gyllenhaal, who like Gosling, are famous but not too famous. This is where the casting for the largely dreadful Batman films of the early 90’s went wrong – George Clooney as Batman didn’t really work for most fans, while someone like Bale was a perfect fit.
Fassbender was all over cinema screens until recently. Perhaps he’s taking a little break right now, but a stint as the new Batman would be just the thing to catapult him to further stardom. He probably wouldn’t make a believable superhero though – his physique might not be right for the role.
As for Gyllenhaal, he would be a slightly unusual choice, but that’s what people said about Christian Bale! He’s won awards before, and he’s underrated as an actor, especially when considering his performance in Brokeback Mountain, so he might be a worthy successor to Bale.
