A Closer Look at Oliver Stone’s Upcoming Film “Savages”
There is no doubt that director Oliver Stone’s upcoming film Savages has us all fired up here at The Film Nest. Simply put, when you factor in some of the director’s most infamous films (Platoon, Wall Street, U-Turn, W.) and the drug trade storyline, you’re going to generate some serious interest. The film reminds me a lot of another great film of the last decade, Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic. In part, I suppose, this reference exists because of the subject matter; in part, due to the desert locations and story; in part, due to having Benicio DelToro in the cast; and finally, in part, because Traffic was an outstanding film from a top-notch filmmaker. Savages, at least on the surface, has quite a bit going for it.
Let’s take a closer look at what we know about the film itself. The young stars are Blake Lively (The Town), Taylor Kitsch (Battleship) and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass). Some of the vets include DelToro, Salma Hayek, and John Travolta…no intros necessary. The plot revolves around some local, So.Cal beach heads who develop some killer weed and have a nice little business going. A good life, with two good friends and one hot gal. The business is going strong and a Mexican drug cartel takes notice and wants in to help it expand.
Alas, the dope growers are not too keen on this idea and they try to pass on this offer. However, it was an offer that was not to be refused, so the hot gal and girlfriend (Lively) gets kidnapped by the cartel. A high stakes war is thus begun, with local growers attempting to fight back against the cartel and win back their girl and their old lives. We don’t know all the rest, but we fully expect it to be exciting. Take a look at the video below to get a closer look at Olver Stone’s Savages.
