In this edition of classic scenes, we check in on the seminal buddy, love, football, stnad by your morals flick, Jerry Maguire. Directed by Cameron Crowe, Maguire remains one of Cruise’s most influential films and the movie that earned Cuba Gooding Jr. and Oscar and subsequently, he was almost never to be heard from again. (That is truly sad, by the way. See Halle Berry.) Anyway, while there are countless scenes in the movie we could go with as classic such as “You had me at Hello”, “Show Me The Money” or “Tidwell’s Touchdown”, we decided to go a little more understated with “Help Me Help You”.
In this scene, Cruise’s super-agent confronts the contractless would be WR star, Gooding’s Rod Tidwell about working with him to help him (Jerry) get Rod, the best deal he can get for him. Well, into practice Jerry wants Rod to drop the attitude and play the game a bit, so that Jerry can get Rod a nice contract and get them both in a better place (financially and otherwise). Here, Jerry pleads with Rod. You’ve seen it before, now see it again.
