The 2010 Golden Globe nominations were released this morning and as expected, there were a few surprises. Most glaringly, was the inclusion of The Tourist for not only Best Picture – Musical or Comedy but also its leads Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie bot receiving nominations for best actor/actress respectively. This is a movie that received “no stars” from acclaimed film critic Peter Travers at Rolling Stone. Burlesque also snuck in a nomination for Best Picture in the same category as The Tourist, which lends further credence to this category being a complete joke.
On the positive side, The Social Network nabbed major nominations in Best Pic, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Director, continuing its trend from the last week or so. Nominations in those same categories were matched by The Fighter as well. The King’s Speech led the way with 7 total nominations. This sets up what appears to be a three way race early on for Oscar glory at the Academy Awards next February. We’ll see. My likely movie of the year, Christopher Nolan’s genius Inception got a best pic nod, but The Town did not, so I guess that eliminates its chances for any real major awards. What do you think? Here is the entire list of those nominated in the film categories (TV not included, sorry – not my thing).
