This Week in Blu (12/15): ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ ‘The Hangover’

Written and compiled by The Film Nest guest contributor “FightinIrish” (peep him in the Comments section)

It seems quality and not quantity is the name of Blu-ray game this late in the year and this week’s releases offer no exception to the rule. Two huge blockbusters from this summer, acclaimed by both critics and moviegoers, although completely different in style make their way to us this week. They’d make any BD owner’s Christmas a bright one. There are a few lesser known titles available as well, but this week is definitely front-heavy.

Please know anything you buy through use of the attached links goes toward supporting us at The Film Nest. Thanks in advance.

Inglourious Basterds

inglourious-basterds

One of the best films of the year and by far Tarantino’s best film of the decade.  A must-own that hopefully will get some love come awards time, and the performance by Christopher Waltz is top notch. Now, anytime you say “Nazi,” you have to say it a la Brad Pitt… “Natzee.”  It’s been written, so it shall be done.  Check the review to refresh your memory of this piece of greatness.

Supplements: Extended & Alternate Scenes, Roundtable Discussion, Nation’s Pride, The Making of Nation’s Pride, The Original Inglorious Bastards, A Conversation with Rod Taylor, Rod Taylor on Victoria Bitter, Quentin Tarantino’s Camera Angel, Hi Sallys, Film Poster Gallery Tour, Killin’ Nazis Trivia Challenge, BD-Live

The Hangover

the-hangover

One of the other great films of the summer, surprising what can be done with a little budget and great writing. Just as with the previously mentioned film, this is also a must-own, if only for Mike Tyson’s appearance. P.S. He’s still got it. Also, do not stop the film until after the credits start to roll. Our review pronounced it as the best use of an end credits sequence ever.

Supplements: Map of Destruction, The Madness of Ken Jeong, Action Mash-Up, Three Best Friends Song, The Dan Band!, Gag Reel, More Pictures from the Missing Camera,

BD-LIVE (“Iron Mike Online Teaser” and “Cursing Mash-Up”), PIP Commentary

G-Force

g-force

A perfect example of big budget Hollywood gone bad.  This really isn’t even a film that most kids would enjoy. Sadly, the state of children’s and family movies in Hollywood these days is rather disappointing. Sure this will look and sound good, never doubt a Bruckheimer production, but you won’t even get the full tilt experience of 3D.  One can not have their G-Force without 3D.

Supplements: Audio Commentary with director Hoyt H. Yeatman, Jr., Blasters Boot Camp, G-Force Mastermind, G-Farce: Bloopers, Deleted scenes, Music videos, Cine-Explore with Darwin, Blaster and their Creator, Bruckheimer Animated, Access Granted

The Mel Brooks Collection

the-mel-brooks-collection

Pretty much any Brooks’ film you need to see is in this collection of 9 films (Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, History of the World Part 1, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Silent Movie, Spaceballs, To Be or Not to Be, Twelve Chairs and Young Frankenstein).  Some hits and some misses, but a collection I would love to own myself. Limited on special features, but most of these films that are on Blu-ray now are lacking in that department and some aren’t as of yet available to own separately.

Supplements: Featurettes, Deleted scenes, Trivia tracks, More!

Taking Woodstock

I never figured Demitri Martin for a movie actor. His comedy is funny, but it’s in the vein of a Carrot Top; simple gags that make you use your brain a little bit, but never really connect with the joke that follows. Also surprising to me is that this was directed by Ang Lee, yet had little to no publicity or marketing. A small film about how Woodstock came to be, the people who made it happen and how this event changed their lives.  Should be worthy of giving this film a spin.

Supplements: Audio commentary with director Ang Lee and writer James Schamus, Deleted scenes, No Audience Required – The Earth Light Players, Peace, Love and Cinema, My Scenes Sharing, BD-Live

The Other Man

the-other-man

A film with a noteworthy cast about infidelity and how the victim responds. If it was about the Woods family, we know the wife responds with a golf club. Liam Neeson, Laura Linney and Antonio Banderas star.

Supplements: Commentary by Richard Eyre, Cast and crew interviews, Theatrical trailer

La Boheme

la-boheme

Everthing I know about La Boheme I learned from Trading Places, and that is that “it’s an Opera,” and when you say that you give a smug look to the person next to you.  Well this is a film version of that Opera.  Is it any good?  Buy it and find out for yourself.

Supplements: Interviews with stars and director
