Director Chuck Russell Brings ‘Arabian Nights’ to 3D

Director Chuck Russell (The Mask), who previously co-wrote The Blob (1988) and The Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors with Frank Darabont, has lined up a directing gig in the from of an adaptation of the classic stories of “Arabian Nights” and will be bringing his new film to the screen with an additional dimension. Dimension number 3.

According to “Variety,” Russell co-wrote the script with Barry P. Ambrose in what will be “a new spin on the classic, the story follows a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers.”

“Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride,” Russell said.

We’ve written a lot of 3D critiques in the past, most recently the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D review, and though I don’t think 3D is warranted on everything, I will confess to recently seeing Joe Dante’s new film, The Hole 3D, and loving the technology (full review on that film, soon). Russell hasn’t directed a film since 2002’s Dwayne Johnson-starring The Scorpion King, which I can safely say I didn’t see. I’m intrigued by the concept and after recently seeing some 3D that really worked, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for this.

  1. Im a big fan of Russell's The Blob and his Elm st 3. The guy is a very solid genre director and is more talented than a majority of hacks working today.
