Danny Boyle’s Next Film Done in ‘127 Hours’

It seems like it’s been a long time since writing Danny Boyle’s name and it has been. After the director and his film, Slumdog Millionaire, stormed the Oscars last year, there’s been little to write about without him having chosen another project. Today, the project has been chosen. And we shall all celebrate.

Boyle is set to film 127 Hours, based on the story of mountaineer Aron Ralston. You may remember the true-life story, but “Variety” offers a refresher course:

Ralston’s right forearm got pinned for nearly five days under a boulder during a climb in Utah in May 2003. He used a dull knife to amputate the limb, then scaled a 65-foot sheer wall and hiked out before running into a family that gave him water and food. He was finally rescued by helicopter.

Boyle has written a treatment for the film and talks are already undergoing with Slumdog’s writer, Simon Beaufoy, to flesh it out into a screenplay. If things come to pass, the lead actor is the final key component in the project, which should be a huge rule due to the actor being alone for the vast majority of the film. Think Tom Hanks in Cast Away or Will Smith in I am Legend. The film is aiming for a late 2010 release.

I don’t think it’s possible to not be psyched about another Boyle film after the Cinderella story of Slumdog Millionaire practically sweeping last year’s Oscar show. Of the films nominated, it was completely deserved. It’ll be interesting how he’ll be able to hold on to the viewer’s interest in a piece that largely showcases one individual. I fear it’ll most likely resemble the Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild, which contained great acting, but I didn’t think had much else to it. Although, the denouement and fate of the characters will be opposites. I can’t wait. What do you think?
