Spike Jonze “Fairytale” Short Film starring Kanye West

Here is Spike Jonze short film We Were Once A Fairytale, starring Kanye West. The Where The Wild Things Are (a movie that 3 out of 4 (so far) The Film Nest critics loved) director debuted the movie at the LA Film Festival last year.  It was expected to hit iTunes for consumption shortly thereafter but never showed up.  Today it was found.  The film, which basically features the controversial rapper playing a drunk-off-his-ass version of himself, has that same sort of love it or hate it polarization that not only Jonze seems to be bringing audiences (or critics) with his new “Wild Things” movie but also Mr. West’s antics have as an artist.  The MC is known almost as much for his brazen bragadochio, a persona that has led to many misfits (most recently the one at the MTV Awards with Taylor Swift), as he is for his chart topping music.

Speaking personally, I am completely polarized by Kanye.  I really love his music (some of which is featured in the film), but can’t stand the person (at least the public person that both he and the media have fed us) in large part.  On the other hand, I loved Jonze’s box office hit (currently #1 in America), so I am drawn to this material for its quirkiness. It’s almost a guilty pleasure for me. Strangely fascinating and completely open to interpretation.  You might easily call this a form of art imitating life in this case, but that would seem too easy (especially since the film predates his most recent antics).  It actually has elements of “Wild Things” in the film (watch through to the end to verify my take on that).  Props to GATW for the info.

A few extra mini-notes, look out for a Bentley Farnsworth cameo, for those that know him, and to get real deep into it, check Kanye’s timepiece (since I am a BIG watch aficionado), an AP Royal Oak (I can tell by looking at it); a dope piece to be sure. Let us know what you think of the 11-minute film, love it or hate it, below.  Enjoy.

Seeing a hammered Kanye was kind of amusing. The end of the short was definitely trippy, but oddly endearing.
