Tim Lincecum. Justin Verlander. Dan Haren. These guys throw heat and throw it well. However, three guys you probably haven’t heard of just threw a pitch more expensive than those guys combined (though Barry Zito’s per-pitch dollars probably come pretty close, especially if you’re talking strikes).
Johnathon Schaech, Josh Wolf and Richard Chizmar just sold a pitch for an untitled baseball comedy to Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison. The story is based on the early Little League life of Baltimore Orioles 1983 World Series MVP, Rick Dempsey. Dempsey’s Little League coach, John Jennings, took the team to a World Championship in 1963 and then was convicted of being a bank robber. Schaech described the film to “Variety,” as “Catch Me if You Can meets Bad News Bears with a touch of Bad Santa.”
I can safely say my opinion of Sandler has never been higher than after his performance in Funny People, but his production company has done nothing I would like to see again if I had the misfortune of seeing something for the first time. I do like the sound of the pitch, though, and hope the film realized can live up to the description.
