As I continue to prove my utter lack of knowledge of what’s on TV these days, we get word that actor Jason Sudeikis (who, I ask?) is joining the on again off again lovebirds Justin Long and Drew Barrymore for the rom-com Going The Distance. Why would I make such a barb at my TV prowess? I don’t know who Sudeikis is. Apparently, he is a writer and cast member for the (long defunct, or at least should be) TV sketch “comedy” show “Saturday Night Live.” I didn’t know that this show was even on the air anymore (facetious), but honestly I haven’t watched this with any remote regularity since Chrises Rock and Farley were on 15 years ago. I loved Eddie Murphy as “Gumby.” Even Belushi as “Samurai Chef.” I know it busted the careers of Rob Schneider, “makin’ copies” and I haven’t really seen it since. It can never be known as a show of quality after that point in my eyes. But I digress, I apologize to Sudeikis and his fans, it’s not meant as a slight to him that I don’t know him, just a strong suspicion that I won’t find him incredibly funny if he is grinding it out on that trash. Hey, at least its work.
As for the film (that’s what you wanted to know about, right?, I get it), THR reports the following:
Sudeikis will play Box, a friend of Garrett’s (Long) who counsels him against trying to maintain his long-distance relationship with Barrymore’s character. Charlie Day and Christina Applegate also were recently cast. Geoff LaTulippe wrote the screenplay, which Nanette Burstein is directing.
Apparently Sudekis is a regular on “30 Rock,” another TV show I have not seen, though I gather that it is essentially a place for SNL’ers to get on TV outside of their sketch roles. I think I hear that Tracy Morgan is on that show, which again, means credibility is shot. And I love Alec Baldwin. Oh well. On the flip side, Barrymore has long ago earned the reputation as queen of the rom-com and Long turned heads as the Apple spokesman of course (now that, I saw!). Actually, in my eyes, Long was very strong in his cameo for last year’s Kevin Smith film, Zack & Miri Make a Porno. He was better there than I realized he could be. I’m not much for the rom-coms, so this concept is not going to blow my mind, but if you have an opinion on “Distance” or Sudeikis’ acting skills, let us know.
