Penn Leaves ‘Cartel’ & ‘Stooges’ for Family

We have some somewhat disappointing news today as we’ve discovered that Sean Penn has dropped out of two high profile film projects in Cartel and The Three Stooges remake.  Both films were anticipated here at the Nest.  In Cartel, Penn was seemingly perfectly cast as a man who sought revenge after his wife was murdered by a Mexican drug cartel.  I can see the menace in his eyes now, but its not to be.  Asger Leth, the film’s director and Paramount, the studio with the project, are looking at recasting the film as we speak.  Any ideas on who you’d like to see here?  Please share.

As far as the “Stooges,” Farelly Brothers directed film, Penn was going to play “Larry” to Benicio Del Toro’s “Moe” and Jim Carrey’s “Curly.”  While when we first heard of the casting, it seemed a little strange, for that very reason, I love that casting.  The studio is still mum on if they will go forward to try to recast or wait it out ’til Penn decides he wants to come back and work.  At the crux of the problem are Penn’s familial obligations.  It has been reported often in recent months that he has had marital troubles with actress Robin Wright and they have had divorce papers filed twice but then yanked them for an opportunity at reconciliation.  This is further proof that women can make men crazy.  Total Film confirmed that Penn cited “personal reasons” opting to spend more time with his family.  He says he could be off for up to a year.  If he leaves this project as well, do you have any replacements in mind?  I personally think Clooney plays dim-witted quite well, but not sure if he fits in with the idea of who Larry is physically at least.  We’ll see what happens and keep you abreast of it all.
