A slow day means it’s time for another edition of our Classic Scenes.  Those of you that know me, know it’s no secret that Boyz N The Hood is one of my favorite films of all time.  I could pick out any number of  scenes from the film and have it in a slot for our “classic scenes.”  Now this piece below is admittedly a little crass in terms of it’s preachiness.  Director John Singletary has a tendency to do that sometimes.  The art of subtlety wasn’t his forte’ early on (that’s not necessarily saying that it is a forte’ of his now).  Nevertheless, this scene where Ice Cube’s Doughboy is playing the card game “spades” with the homies Monster, Chris, and Dooky is a true classic.  As Cube deals the cards out, the quartet discuss the issues surrounding sex and HIV with a brilliant “cheerio” reference to boot.  Believe it or not, I can see other scenes from this movie showing up in the column in future years, but for now, settle for this funny take on AIDS in the ‘hood.  Good stuff.  As always, share your thoughts on this with us, I would love to debate the film in any way!  Peace.
