I'm a big fan of Rachel Getting Married. Except for the editing (which was too leisurely), it was a very well-made, intelligent movie.

I really wanted to like Synecdoche, New York, but it lost me fairly early on. I've seen enough of the movies that Kaufman wrote to know how much he enjoys playing with reality. That said, the last half hour or so is both haunting and brilliant.

The movie I loved the most unreservedly of the serious award contenders was Milk. Yes, it was a pretty straight-forward biopic, but the acting and recreation of mid-'70s San Francisco were both terrific.
