Dinobots No Longer Roam Earth In ‘Transformers 2′ (Video)

For a massive fan of “Transformers” as a kid (more to come in my preview for the film), the rumor of the five Dinobots appearing in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was pretty exciting. Imagine the potent  combination of dinosaurs and “Transformers.” To a child, there couldn’t have been any better concoction. The thought of seeing them up on the big screen, even if purely for nostalgia’s sake, was a dream come true. Sadly, we’ve received word via the MTV Movies Blog that dream is no longer a reality. At least for Revenge of the Fallen.

In an interview with Simon Furman, a longtime writer of “Transformers” comics and consultant on Transformers, he revealed to MTV the pre-historic robots are not to be.

“I think that possibility was raised briefly and fairly comprehensively shot down,” said Furman. “Much as I love the Dinobots, I’m glad.”

That means we no longer have the opportunity to look up at Grimlock (T-Rex), Slag (Triceratops), Sludge (Brontosaurus), Snarl (Stegosaurus) and Swoop (Pteranodon). At least not in astounding ILM-developed graphics.

“The movie-verse feels quite different to me, with its own audience and far more rooted in the real world, and Dinobots wouldn’t necessarily be a great fit. Sure, if they could come up with an appropriate rationale and integral reason for them being in there, fine, but it’d need to be good, otherwise it would all start to verge on the kitsch,” said Furman.

Ultimately it was a matter of not being able to devise a reason to write the Dinobots into the story. I completely understand the illogic of it, but damn if it wouldn’t be cool to see.

Although I’m not “devastated” (a complete stretch just to link to this picture), it would’ve been sweet to see the Dinobots come to life outside of plastic parts moved about by my hand. It’s especially disappointing after the quick tease from the Transformers viral website, Sector 7, that had a quick video clip of the almighty Grimlock a couple of years ago.

What do you think of this news? Are you less, more or just as excited?

Oh, and there’s no way I couldn’t post that Grimlock clip. Get some!

Just to remind you, Transfomers: Revenge of the Fallen will be airing a TV spot during Sunday’s Super Bowl. You won’t want to miss that.
