The Hollywood Foreign Press announced their nominations for the 2008 Golden Globes this morning. As usual, there were some noted surprises. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. will go toe to toe for Best Supporting Actor opposite Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight performance. Also, very glad to see Rebecca Hall get recognized for her work in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. To self congratulate, as I mentioned in my review, she did great work but this was the first I have heard her being acknowledged at all in that way.
The Globes always have some wackiness to them, typically in regards to what should be a comedy/musical and what should be considered a drama. This is so subjective but this year it’s played pretty straight with the only notable inclusion perhaps being the excellent In Bruges which was certainly funny but also had some heft to it. Below is the list, taken from the HFPA website.
